Subsisting entirely on junk food and beer, El Borbah conducts his investigations with tough talk and a short temper. He smashes through doors and skulls as he stalks a perfectly realized film-noir city filled with punks, geeks, business-suited creeps and mad scientists.

El Borbah features five science-fiction and true-detective episodes: In "Robot Love," rebellious kids in nightclubs replace their "parts" with mechanical substitutes as part of a new fad, only to find that their parents have been automating themselves all along; in "Love in Vein" a mad visionary sperm donor plans a master race and turns "his" kids against their parents; "Bone Voyage" details the exploits of a cult called the Brotherhood of the Bone, a kind of cross between the Masons and the Mansons. El Borbah is Burns' earliest work, created in the early 1980s, though the work remains eerily contemporary. Charles Burns effortlessly spins yarns with gritty punchlines and pictures so perfect they must have existed in some collective memory of junk drama. What more natural (and more Shakespearean) than to add a further layer, and make this adaptation about a wronged director staging this play that itself contains a play within the play? Well, to be honest, there were a few chapters early on when I feared that the approach might be too cute for words. It chronicles the calm, thoughtful and often heartfelt testimony of 21 supporters who addressed the Vermont Public Service Board during hearings held to determine if the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant should receive a Certificate of Public Good for continued operation. As a parent I liked the message that sometimes people do not feel exactly the way they say they do. Second a VC insiders book letting you understand their motivations and goals, and third an entertaining, slightly irreverent, and many time humorous book that gets you through an essentially and necessarily complex subject. Those whom Greene labels as the MOST anti-seductive are the people who think exclusively of their own needs. Brian Ching is a good artist, his style just is just not right for this book.
